OCR: The diesel engine is not without its disadvantages. Because of the relatively high pressures and lean mixtures required for complete combustion, it is usually more expensive, larger and heavier than a gas engine of the same power. Also, the diesel fuel injector is one of the more complex and expensive systems on the engine, and is one of the reasons for its relatively high cost. Diesel engines are also relatively noisy, because of what is called "diesel knock". Diesel knock occurs at the beginning of each combustion cycle as the fuel is being injected into the hot/high pressure air in the combustion chamber. There is a momentary delay between the start of injection and the initiation of burning. After this delay, the relatively small amount of fuel explodes, producing the knocking sound. F ...
